The development saga of The Wolf Among Us 2 has been a tumultuous and disheartening journey for fans of the original. Years of delays, a studio closure, and a series of confusing announcements have left players with more questions than answers. The latest and perhaps most worrying development comes from a recent interview with AdHoc Studio, the original writing team for the project. In a candid conversation with Eurogamer, the studio confirmed what many had long suspected: they have moved on from the project and have no idea what is currently happening with the game. This revelation solidifies The Wolf Among Us 2 as one of the most mysterious and beleaguered titles in the industry today, a project lost somewhere between creative vision and corporate limbo.

The original Telltale Games, the developer behind the beloved first season of The Wolf Among Us, announced a sequel in 2017. However, the studio’s dramatic and sudden closure in 2018 put an end to the project. The company was later resurrected under new management, and a new version of The Wolf Among Us 2 was announced at The Game Awards in 2019. This new iteration was a partnership between the revived Telltale and AdHoc Studio, a new company founded by former Telltale staff who worked on the original game. This seemed like a perfect fit, a way to ensure the sequel would retain the same creative spirit as the original. The game was in active production, with a new trailer in 2022 and a release window set for 2023. However, that release window was later pushed to 2024 to avoid crunch and to allow the team to upgrade the game to Unreal Engine 5. But since then, communication has been sporadic at best, and the project has once again gone silent, fueling fan anxiety and rampant rumors of cancellation.

AdHoc’s Uncertain Departure

During the interview, AdHoc co-founder Nick Herman, who directed the first episode of the original game, spoke about the team’s pride in the work they had done on the sequel. “We wrote a season, Season Two,” Herman explained. “We think it’s better than Season One.” He went on to say that the studio was in the middle of cinematic and animation work when Telltale informed them that they needed more time. Without a clear timeline or direction, AdHoc made the difficult decision to move on to their new project, Dispatch, to keep the studio afloat. Herman expressed his hope that Telltale would use their script and cinematic work, but admitted, “I don’t know how much of our version of the script is going to make it into what they end up making.” This quote is a chilling reminder of the game’s precarious state. The original creative team, the very people who made the first game so special, are now on the outside, with no knowledge of the project’s current direction. The script, which they believe is “better than Season One,” may never see the light of day.

The Telltale Turmoil

The reason for the continued delays and lack of information seems to be a combination of internal turmoil at the new Telltale. In late 2023, the studio suffered a series of significant layoffs, with reports suggesting that “most” of the team was let go. While Telltale issued a statement saying that “all projects in development are still in production,” the departure of the primary creative team for The Wolf Among Us 2 casts serious doubt on that claim. It also echoes the tragic end of the original Telltale, where a series of questionable management decisions and over-ambitious projects led to its ultimate collapse. It seems the new Telltale may be repeating the mistakes of the past, as it is also developing a new title based on the TV series The Expanse, which has reportedly underperformed.

For now, the mystery of The Wolf Among Us 2 remains. Telltale’s last public comment on the game was in October 2024, when they denied cancellation rumors and stated that development “continues.” But without a creative lead and with the original writers having moved on, it’s hard to be optimistic. The project is a perfect storm of bad luck and questionable business decisions. Fans are left in the dark, and the game that many have been waiting over a decade for seems to be fading further and further into the mists of Fabletown. The best we can hope for is that one day, a finished product will emerge, and that it will live up to the creative vision of the brilliant writers who are now working on a new game. Until then, the story of Bigby Wolf and Snow White is on a permanent, and very unsettling, cliffhanger.
